Women have been enhancing their faces, breasts or bodies for many years now, but men can feel more reluctant to announce their desire to make changes with cosmetic surgery. However, a new survey carried out by Men’s Health magazine has revealed that the increasing pressure of social media is driving the rise in male cosmetic surgery.
The survey also revealed that half of men under the age of 35 make more of an effort to appear attractive on social media, cropping or editing photos. Forty-six per cent of young men also take multiple ‘selfies’ before choosing the perfect one.
Top male cosmetic surgery procedures
Leading plastic surgery organisation, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) carries out an annual safety audit of their members who represent the majority of NHS-trained plastic surgery and aesthetic surgeons in the UK. The figures they released at the beginning of the year indicated the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for men:
- Rhinoplasty
- Otoplasty or ear correction
- Liposuction
- Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift
- Male breast reduction or gynaecomastia surgery
Across the board there was a general dip in cosmetic surgery statistics, but for men there was a sharp rise in abdominoplasty, up 47% on the previous year’s figures.
Why is the tummy tuck is increasingly popular with men?
Whether you’ve lost a great deal of weight and are troubled by sagging skin and lax abdominal muscles or you’re troubled by pockets of excess fat, the abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck) could be the perfect solution.
A tummy tuck is a highly effective way to improve the stomach’s contours, making it appear much flatter and firmer, and by tightening the abdominal wall muscles it can also help to improve core strength and can aid in your post-surgery training results.
With increasing body pressure on men due to social media, it’s no wonder that body conscious men are turning to procedures such as the tummy tuck.
