Becoming a parent is one of life’s greatest pleasures, but that doesn’t mean that this joyous occasion comes without its downsides. Of these, it’s the physical changes that pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding can inflict on the body that often cause confidence levels to drop and self-esteem to hit an all-time low.

At The Beauty Gurus, the “mummy makeover” is a popular programme of surgical procedures designed to provide mums old and new with a route back to their pre-pregnancy body shape in the aftermath of starting a family.

Performed in our Birmingham, Hereford and Limerick clinics, this normally consists of breast uplift surgery and abdominoplasty, otherwise known as a tummy tuck. For further cosmetic improvement, patients also have the option to undergo breast enlargement as part of their treatment programme.

Breast uplift surgery
Whilst it’s true that sagging breasts can be part of getting older, this is something that occurs much more readily in women who have given birth. Breasts can begin to droop and lose volume thanks to regular breastfeeding – something that can make many women feel self-conscious about how they look.

With breast uplift surgery, or a mastopexy in medical terms, patients can enjoy a significant improvement in the shape and position of their breasts. Our highly skilled surgeons achieve this by making several careful incisions on and around the breasts throughout a 90-minute-long procedure.

As this is performed under general anaesthetic, patients will normally be required to remain in hospital overnight and should recover from surgery within four weeks.

Breast enlargement
As breast uplift surgery does little to alter the volume of the breasts, many patients choose to combine this procedure with breast enlargement. Breast enlargement – also known as breast augmentation or a “boob job” – consists of inserting silicone or saline-based implants into the breasts as a means of increasing their fullness and addressing any inconsistencies in size.

When carrying out this procedure, our surgeons will commonly use the “made to measure” technique to ensure that your breasts continue to look as natural as possible and any trace of surgery remains largely unnoticeable to friends and family alike.

Once again, owing to the invasive nature of this form of surgery, patients will normally be required to stay in the hospital for at least one night and work through a recovery period of at least two weeks.

Some patients opt for a newer technique, called Fat Grafting. This involves performing liposuction to areas of your body that you are unhappy with, to give you an improved figure and to then use that fat to graft into your breasts (so it is 100% natural to your body). It is a permanent solution that grows and shrinks with you as you gain or lose weight. It is extremely good for patients wanting a mummy makeover as we usually use the fat from the tummy tuck for this purpose, making it a clinically and economically sound choice.

Abdominoplasty
Despite doing what you can to restore your body to its former glory, it can sometimes be difficult to shed the excess tummy skin that is so often a by-product of becoming a new mum. Fortunately, abdominoplasty can succeed where a strict dietary and exercise regime has failed and is an effective method of removing saggy skin and stubborn pockets of fat from all around the abdominal area once you have started to recover from giving birth.

This procedure will allow you to achieve a flatter stomach by tightening the muscles in your tummy and taking away the excess fat and skin that has accumulated on your lower abdomen as a result of pregnancy.

Recovery time for abdominoplasty can vary from patient to patient but this can sometimes take up to six weeks, so it is important to really consider the implications of this treatment before deciding to go under the knife.
