According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), the independent plastic surgery association of which our surgeons are members, there were approximately 28,000 cosmetic surgery operations performed last year, and a similar number the year before.

Cosmetic breast surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery operations in the UK, as many women are (or become) dissatisfied with the look of their breasts. Some women are never happy with the cards that nature has dealt them; they may have always had reservations/self-confidence issues with their breasts, while others may develop these issues over time.

What causes women to dislike their breasts?

There are a number of factors that can affect how positive women feel towards their breasts, and these include:

The natural size and shape of their breasts

Despite nature creating breasts in all shapes and sizes, there will always be some women who are unhappy with what they have got. Whether they feel they are too big or too small, too low or too uneven, if women are dissatisfied with their own breasts, it doesn’t take too long for them to start considering what can be done to make them feel better about themselves. This is undoubtedly compounded by what they see in the press and in social media – those who are happier with their figures showing off their best assets for all to see.

Weight gain/loss

Yo-yo dieting can have a big impact on the natural elasticity of the skin, and if you have gained weight and lost it again, you may start to see that your breasts are suffering as a result. Skin is naturally buoyant to a degree, but once it becomes too stretched it is hard for it to look as good as it once did. Although slimming down may be an objective for many of us, it can, unfortunately, bring some unwelcome side effects.

The natural ageing process

Like it or not, gravity is one of the most powerful forces of nature and will naturally have an effect on the appearance of breasts over time. Wearing a well-fitting bra (especially when exercising) can help mitigate these effects, but eventually gravity will win.

There are various cosmetic breast surgery options that can help women who are dissatisfied with their breasts. Cosmetic breast surgery options range from breast enhancement, which is the process whereby cup size can be increased with the use of implants, and is typically the favoured approach when women feel their breasts are too small or are uneven in size.

Breast uplift surgery involves the reshaping of the breasts and removal of excess tissue and skin, lifting the nipple so the breasts look more elevated than they were.

For others, if the concern is their breasts are too large, breast reduction surgery can help reduce tissue mass and make the size of their breasts more manageable. For women with very large breasts, this can help reduce symptoms such as back and shoulder ache.
