This article puts into perspective several points we have been discussing over the years.
We would never carry out surgery that we cannot do safely. This type of surgery is difficult and unless the surgeon is properly trained and experienced, it carries very high risks by comparison to other types of surgery.
Going abroad does indeed work out cheaper in respect of the price. However, our NHS hospitals see revision patients every single week from surgery abroad. Mr Vijh has spearheaded the plastics department for many years in the Queen Elizabeth Hopsital in Birmingham where many patients have presented for surgery following treatment abroad.
As a full member of BAAPS I wholeheartedly agree with their caution. This group of surgeons is the top surgeons in the UK. You have to pass many years of exams to gain entry.
The financial cost of revision surgery, not to mention the distress of having revision surgery, is simply NOT WORTH the initial saving.
Please, if you are considering surgery go to a fully qualified UK trained surgeon: one that has performed hundreds of operations successfully, one that is registered on the specialist register and (although it sounds strange) one that is a surgeon; not a GP!
Take care,
Vik Vijh
